FAQs
Hearing aid basics
How to wear hearing aids:
If you wear eyeglasses, put your glasses on first.
- With tube attached, place the hearing aid behind your ear.
- Hold the tube between thumb and index finger with dome pointing towards the ear canal.
- With hearing aid behind your ear, insert dome into ear canal. Tip: Pulling up and back on your ear may make it easier to insert the tube and dome into your ear canal.
- Curl and tuck retention lock along the bowl of your ear.
- Tube may bulge slightly near ear canal. Using your fingertip, press gently at the bend in the tube to ensure proper placement of dome. Tip: The dome should be completely, or almost completely, in the ear canal (the dome will not touch the eardrum). This is key to getting enough loudness and avoid feedback (whistling).
- Without applying pressure, slide fingertip up the tube towards the top of the ear, making sure the tube rests against the side of your head.
- The hearing aid rests nicely behind the ear.
- The tube should rest against the side of the head without any bulging.
- The dome should remain in the ear canal securely.
- Tube bulges near the top of the ear.
- Tube is not resting against the side of your head.
- Hearing aid will not stay tucked behind the ear.
- Hearing aid pulls forward over the top of the ear and will not stay in place.
- The hearing aid pulls forward when inserting the dome into the ear canal.
- Dome keeps falling out of ear canal or does not stay securely in place.
ATTENTION: Confirm dome is attached to the tube each time dome is removed from ear. If domes remains, seek medical advice.
Checking the fit for comfort:
For optimal comfort:
TUBE MAY BE TOO LONG IF:
If tube is too long, try a shorter size length of tube.
TUBE MAY BE TOO SHORT IF:
If tube is too short, try a longer size length of tube.
To insert the battery:
- Remove the tab from the flat, positive (+) side of the battery. Wait one minute for battery to reach full power before using (or testing).
- Open the battery door on your hearing aid and locate the positive (+) symbol inside the top rim of the battery door. This indicates that the flat, positive side of the battery should face up in the same direction as the positive (+) symbol.
- Place the battery in the battery door – NOT directly inside the hearing aid. Fit the battery in the door with the flat, positive (+) side facing up.
- Close the battery door. Never force the battery door closed. If the door does not close easily then the battery is probably upside down.
Adjusting the volume:
The volume control button allows you to increase and decrease volume levels. Press up to increase the volume and press down to decrease the volume.
You will hear a single beep at each volume setting between the maximum and minimum volume settings. Once the volume reaches maximum and minimum volume, a voice prompt will confirm the maximum or minimum setting.
The volume level will default to the volume setting it was on when the hearing aid was last turned off.
You can also adjust the volume via the Tuned Hearing mobile app.
There are four program settings:
The program control is a push button located above the volume control
Choose between four program settings by pressing the program button. When you press the program button you will hear a voice prompt say "program 1", "program 2", "program 3", or "program 4".
Program Setting 1: Everyday setting –use in most listening situations.
Program Setting 2: Meeting setting –use when having a conversation.
Program Setting 3: Music setting –use when listening to music.
Program Setting 4: Noise setting –reduces the amount of low frequency amplification. Often helpful in noisy situations.
You can also adjust the program settings via the Tuned Hearing mobile app.
Feedback during use can indicate:
- An improper fit.
- A loosely connected or damaged tube.
- A worn-out dome
- Volume or tone settings that contribute to feedback.
- Wax in the ear canal.
- Try a different style and/or size dome to improve fit.
- Replace worn or damaged tube.
- Replace worn or damaged dome.
- Reduce the hearing aid volume.
- Use the Band Equalizer in the Tuned Hearing app to slightly reduce the Treble (high freqency).
- Have a doctor remove wax from your ears.
- Contact Hearing Support Network for remote support. Adjustments can be made remotely that can help.
Daily maintenance
It’s important to keep your hearing aid in good condition. Without regular maintenance, wax and moisture can build up and prevent the hearing aid from working properly. It’s best to perform maintenance on your hearing aid in the morning before you use it.
Maintaining hearing aids:
- Wipe off the outside of the hearing aid and dome with a soft cloth.
- Using the brush included with your hearing aid, gently remove wax and dirt from the hearing aid sound openings.
Hearing aid care recommendations:
- Before storing the hearing aids for extended periods of time, remove batteries and leave the battery door open.
- Hearing aids should be placed into the storage case when not in use.
- Protect hearing aids from extreme hot and cold temperatures.
- Never place your hearing aid in water. If it becomes wet, immediately remove the battery and let your hearing aid stand in a dry place or use a hearing aid dehumidifier for several hours. NEVER use heat (blowdryer, oven, microwave, etc.) to dry your hearing aid.
- Remove hearing aids before applying hair care products, lotions, creams, perfume, and sprays of any kind.
- Replace domes and tubes every three months.
Tubes
There are 4 sizes of tubes available: 0B, 1B, 2B, 3B. Size 0B is the shortest in length and size 3B is the longest. Tube size is located close to where the dome is attached.
To remove the tube:
-
1. Grasp the thicker base of the tube near the top of the hearing aid.
2. Twist the base of the tube 90 degrees to the left or right.
3. Pull the thicker base of the tube away from the hearing aid.
To attach the tube:
-
1. Line up the top of the hearing aid and the thicker tube base and gently push the base of the tube into the hearing aid until it snaps into position.
To maintain the tube:
-
1. Remove the tube from the hearing aid.
2. Remove the dome from the tubing.
3. Insert the clearing tool into the triangular base at the end of the tube and thread it all the way through so it comes out the other end of the tube.
4. Wipe off any debris on the end of the clearing tool before re-using or storing.
For optimal hearing aid performance, replace tubes every three months.
